About the gil morrison memorial scholarship

The Gil Morrison Memorial Scholarship Foundation was established in Gil's name after his passing in January 2017.

Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, community members, former students, and people across the country through donations and proceeds from events throughout the year, two scholarships are awarded annually at Sandwich High School.

Applicants are evaluated anonymously based on GPA, financial need, as well as involvement in school and community activities by a committee of local educators.

About Gil Morrison

Father, husband, friend, and lifelong Detroit fan, Gil lived life in a big way—full of generosity, curiosity, and love. His legacy continues through the Morrison Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors his lifelong commitment to helping students learn, grow, and dream as boldly as he did.

Born in December 1953 and raised in Madison Heights, Michigan, Gil Morrison devoted his life to education, creativity, and community. After earning his degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University, he continued his lifelong love of learning with master’s degrees in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University and in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University.

Over the course of his 34-year career, Gil shaped countless lives through his work as a teacher, coach, principal, and Regional Superintendent of DeKalb County. Whether teaching Language Arts and Social Studies, leading the Challenge program for gifted students, or cheering on his football, baseball, and speech teams, Gil approached every role with enthusiasm, compassion, and a belief in the potential of every student.

A founding member of Indian Valley Theatre, Gil also brought his warmth and humor to the stage as an actor and director, inspiring others through storytelling and collaboration.

Gil married his college sweetheart, Jaye Petersen, in 1978, and together they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and purpose. He was a proud father to Kyle and Corinne, sharing with them his love of learning, theater, and of course, Detroit sports.
